Being a DBA

Fadi Hasweh just wrote a good article about the qualities of a DBA. His point, that key quality is to "know how to learn, quickly" is spot-on.

I've always believed the best skill in any field is to know how to learn. Now, I have to admit I'm baised on this. Since I have a poor memory for specific facts, the ability to find the details I need is a key survival technique. I focus on grasping the underlying concepts -- why things work the way they do and how important concepts interrelate. If you can grok the concepts you'll be ahead of the game, always.

Getting off my soapbox, here's my personal top 5 list of reading materials for newbie Oracle DBAs. For the sake of argument, let's assume you're playing with 10g.

I would put Tom Kyte's new book in the list. While there's some overlap with Effective Oracle there is a systematic plan in his layout in this book IMHO.
