Data Quality Conference: Are you going?

I am so bummed. The IAIDQ Conference (IAIDQ=International Association for Information and Data Quality) is September 22-25, but I won't be able to go. It's just not going to be possible with this year's schedule.

That said, if you have a strong interest in data quality, I encourage you to take a look at the conference program. Larry English and David Loshin are two of the featured speakers. (I still remember a presentation from Larry at a TDWI conference 10 years ago -- he's great.)

Looking further, I see presentations ranging from metrics to politics to dictionaries. Here's just a few examples (there's a lot to choose from):

  • To be honest, I'm not sure how I'd use the information from Erin McKean's keynote, "Data-Induced Serendipity: Finding What You Didn't Know You Knew," but I really, really want to hear it. If I'm reading the abstract right, she'll discuss inferring additional meaning by noting the context in which words are used. For example, she notes that "cause" is primarily used with negative outcomes. I have a feeling there's an important, actionable "something" to be gleaned here, but haven't put my finger on it yet.
  • Christian Walenta will give an update on Information Quality Certification efforts. I like the idea of defining the basic topics all data quality practitioners should be aware of -- though I haven't a clue how to test for it.
  • Thomas Redman will give a workshop on the measurement and control side of data quality. There's always more to learn here.
  • Daragh O Brien (venerable dq blogger) will participate in a panel on "Engaging Senior Management." I have no doubt he'll bring useful insights to the panel.

Are you going to the conference? Is anyone as curious as I am about Erin's keynot? I'd love to hear your thoughts...

Beth,

Thanks for the plug for the IDQ Conference! I'm sure the event will be poorer for your absence (why not submit a paper for next year!).

You are right - with over 30 hours of tutorials and presentations and a number of 'Communities of Practice' (semi-formal discussion groups on topics) during the week there is something for everyone.

I'm just bummed that I can't split myself in 5 and see things when I'm either presenting or manning the IAIDQ's booth. ;-)

Discounts are available for IAIDQ Members (up to €250), DAMA Members and Academics. Details can be found on the Conference site (or email me... daragh[dot]obrien[at]iaidq.org)

Happy to Daragh. I'll have to give some though to a proposal for next year's. I've been thinking about interrelationships between data governance and information quality lately -- perhaps something will evolve from that.

Enjoy the conference!

Beth,

I've been thinking along the same lines the past while. Kind of a chicken/egg debate in my head.

If you want to bounce any ideas around let me know and we can do something in GoogleDocs (maybe even a joint presentation - that would be cool).

And you should definitely do something -writing an article for the IAIDQ newsletter would be a good way to get your thoughts together and a new face is always welcome!

Hi Beth

Unfortunately I'll have to wait until the November event in London, considerably closer to home!

One session I would definitely not miss is the one with Stephanie Fetchen and Kimberly Russo of KFR Services Inc.

They have taken their business beyond six sigma levels of data quality and demonstrate how a small business can deliver best-in-class service quality without the need for expensive tools.

I've just interviewed Stephanie (http://tinyurl.com/3ojnzq), she is fantastic, full of passion for the subject and a testament to the fact that it's not only the big corporations who can profit from outstanding DQ, smaller firms can really create a competitive edge too. Get along if you can, should be a really interesting session.
