Each month the IAIDQ (International Association for Information and Data Quality) (@iaidq) asks the data quality blogging community to submit blog posts for the El Festival del IDQ Bloggers. The carnival is hosted by a different blogger each month and I am very happy to host it for November 2010.
I'm posting this today, November 11, in honor of World Quality Day. This year's theme of 'Out of the Crisis' emphasizes "what a fit organization looks like and the role that quality management professionals play in facilitating fitness." So let's see how this month's bloggers are helping us flex our quality muscles. [I'm listing in the same order the submissions were received.]
First up: Jim Harris (@ocdqblog). Jim is a thought leader in data quality and owner of the Obsessive-Compulsive Data Quality blog.
In Data Quality Magic Jim shows us where the real magic can be found in the world of data quality. The magic isn't found in a tool or a methodology -- so, any guesses where? Organizations emerging from crisis would do well to follow his advice. [note: I wholeheartedly agree with this article -- and I'm a DQ tool seller!]
Continuing from that theme, Jim points out in a later post that Data Quality is Not an Act, It is a Habit. As with any profession, the best practitioners in the tradecraft of data quality continuously strive to improve their knowledge and skills.
Over at the DataFlux Community of Experts he suggests we Don't Do Less Bad, Do Better Good. It's worth reading, and comes complete with a song! [Over the Data Governance Rainbow]
Lastly, we have Declaration of Data Governance complete with a video. Achieving the World Quality Day vision of data quality professionals facilitating organizational fitness requires an understanding of data governance.
Julian Schwarzenbach (@jschwa1) from Data and Process Advantage is up next. Julian brings over 20 years experience in information management and has a passion for improving data and process quality.
Julian's post Information is the Best Disinfectant was inspired by a quote at the Lichfield Literature Festival -- proof that high quality inspiration can strike anywhere. It's good to be reminded of how our dq efforts support the bigger picture.
Henrik Liliendahl SΓΈrensen (@hlsdk) is a data quality and master data management professional with a strong interest in data quality in our multi-lingual world.
Henrik submitted his post Script Systems, in which he considers the diversity of language scripts (alphabets, abjads, etc) around the world and wonders whether writing in English (roman) characters is enough.
Lastly, Dylan Jones (@dataqualitypro) of Data Quality Pro submits an interview with John Talburt discussing data quality education at University of Arkansas at Little Rock. If you've not heard, UALR offers Masters and PhD programs in information quality -- with distance learning options available.
All in all, a good roundup of posts! If you liked these, head over to the IAIDQ Carnival page to see prior months' carnivals.
